Initial Setup. 1-3-1 Full Court Setup. As the name suggest, the 1-3-1 zone defense is set up in a 1-3-1 formation. There are four positions on defense which weāll now walk through. The defender at the top of our zone is called the āchaserā. There are three defenders across the middle of the zone.
10. Duck in and seal back move. 1 to 2 back to 1. 5 ducks in and 1 looks to get the ball to 5. 5 moves the defense by moving several steps along the baseline before ducking in. If we canāt pass to 5, pass to 3. 3 dribbles hard to the baseline and 5 moves outside the lane to receive a bounce pass from 3. The ball goes 1-2-1-3-5.
Man-to-Man Defense - On the Ball Defense. If the ball is at the top of the key (point), over-guard toward the offensive player's strong side. If your man likes to go right, force him/her left. If he/she is adept at going either way, then just play straight-up. If the ball is on the wing, try to force it to the baseline.

Example 2. This is an example of the 1-3-1 press defense that demonstrates a sideline trap once the ball enters into the frontcourt. To begin, X1 and X4 set the trap near the sideline and at the same time, X2 denies the possible pass to the wing area while X3 denies the pass towards the middle. Also, X5 continues to protect the basket.
2-2-1 Press Rules. 1. No middle. Once the ball makes it to the middle of the floor it becomes very hard for the press. 2. Donāt foul on the trap. Our steals donāt come from the trap, they come from the trap forcing the player with the ball to throw a lob pass to the teammate that gets picked off. Never foul on a trap!
