There is no penalty hit when you do so. The contract never expires or needs to be renewed. At the initial talk when you ask to be a mercenary you are told how much pay you will get. When you battle the realms enemies you gain influence, the influence is then converted to denars at regular intervals.
As far as i can tell, The game thinks merc contracts are the same as joining that faction as a lord. A bug i seriously hope gets fixed soon as it really ruins allot of the game play, having people hate you just because you left them when they ran out of wars to fight.

Want to withdraw from fighting and explore other parts of the map but donāt want to seriously damage relationships with lords.

At first, there was a penalty. A few patches in, they removed it. People wanted to be able to hop around merc'ing for different factions. I don't think it's a bad moveinitially being a merc was about as restrictive as being a vassal (as far as relations penalty for leaving faction), without the benefits.
It isnāt a bug, more of a missing feature. I believe that itās critical for players who intend to startup their own kingdom one day to be able to leave a mercenary contract through expiration, and I would hope that TW is planning on adding it but for the time being the only solid way to make money is raid hideouts and get workshops.
